A quick opinion on referencing

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 20, 2017, 12:52 PM

First of all, I'm just going to talk about what referencing art is.
Let's say you stumble upon a style that you love, or let's say you've been watching an artist for years. It's completely natural for you to take some inspiration from that artists style, as in drawing eyes similar to how they do, or even having a similar shading style. Basically, referencing is getting inspired by a style and taking some things that the artist does and put it into your own art.
Referencing is NOT copying or tracing, so please do not get those all mixed up. Copying a style down to every line is copying and is not as rewarding as you think it might be.

Personally, I think referencing is okay as long as you don't reference too closely.
The thing is: People do not own every aspect of their style. There's a 99% chance that some part of their art looks exactly like how somebody else does it by complete coincidence. Of course, they do have full rights to their style altogether, but a simple thing like ear fluff is not completely owned. How they put these aspects together in a full style is what they have rights to speak up about if copied.
What I mean is that if you draw ear fluff in cats a certain well and somebody else gets inspired by something as small as that and does that, getting pissed at them and telling them to stop doing that is wrong. It's immature to start off as well as very petty, as I can say confidently that people have been doing that years before you have, and just because you don't see it around does not mean it hasn't been done.

Just an ending note:
If an artist specifically says do not reference their art, they most likely mean they do not want you referencing too closely to their style that you can see a handful of resemblances. If you like how they draw fur, you are more than welcome to be inspired by that, but if they seem very bothered about it please do not post that referenced art. Give it your own little twist, but do not be angry if someone else's fur style looks like yours.

I mainly kinda take refs from real life pictures and try to turn them into a more cartoony style that way I don't feel like I'm copying anyone.

yes,,
i have a bookmark folder of art inps., and occasionally i'll pick a piece i really like from there and copy it into my drawing program to try and figure out the techniques and brushes they used, bc i think it looks super aesthetic, but i'll never copy it directly onto my own art, y'know? i'll just take like tiny bits and pieces, and try out an inspired lineart style or a shading style similar to someone else's, but they'll all eventually develop into my own style. i mostly do this just to figure out what kind of look i want my style to have, and i'll almost never use the technique copied tbh,,
like yo i'm just tryna figure myself out lmao

im jealous of a lot of peoples styles, I especially take an interest into a lazy style (if that's a thing) but that doesn't mean I should go tracing peoples lazy art, im still trying to discover my own style, starting with chubby limbs owo

highkey i dont even bother trying to look like sombody else's style like whats the point
???????? even if it looks good i dont know why people do it it just shows how you're trying to hard to be popular/better at your art lmao
the only referencing i do is when i need help with proportions and or poses and that is only with irl photos

Actually, even directly copying someone's style is the best way to practice! like yeah, maybe you shouldn't upload it, but literally all professionals do mastercopies (which is literally copying a piece of artwork as closely as possible). You do them all the time in art classes/art school, because the best way to learn is to try and do exactly what other people have done.

I know what you mean and I completely agree! Posting it though or using it for profit could end ugly, and that's what I mean!

I feel like my art style is just kind of generic as far as cats an stuff (considering I don't really draw anything else lol) so if people got inspired by my style I really wouldn't mind if they took stuff from it. I completely agree with all of this stuff

I totally agree with you!
Although... I used to do that when I first started drawing, but over time,
I developed my own style, but I don't know what to say about it ;v;
The only thing I can say about my style is that it doesn't look like the references
I used! o:

Yea

It's not exactly what I meant what I meant is for example is the large amount of people taking LupisVulpes' style? Like whyy I mean I know it's probably children but they should learn to develop their own style

I mean that's my opinion on it

but not gonna lie I used to trace Finchwing's and post some of it
people need to learn just not to post it

of course copying a style from starting off is okay because almost everyone does it, but like don't post it
